One of the most critical roles of journalism is fact-checking.

Research can contribute to this process by providing reliable accurate data that journalists can use to verify the accuracy of information they receive. Research serves as an essential tool for information gathering and source verification. Journalists can use research to find credible sources of information, confirm facts and figures, and gather background information on a particular story. Research allows journalists delve deep into a story, providing readers with a mere comprehensive understanding of complex issues.

Investigative journalism requires extensive research and data analysis. Investigative journalists use a range of tools, including freedom of information requests, interviews, and data analysis to uncover hidden information, and expose wrongdoing. Research is a critical component to this process, providing the evidence needed to support a story and the context to explain the significance of that evidence.

Informing and policy and decision making is one of the most important functions of research which aims at informing policy and decision-making. Research findings can provide valuable insights into the causes and implications of various societal problems. This information can then be used by policy makers and decision-makers to design programmes and policies that addresses these issues. Research contributes to economic development by promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

Research provides the knowledge base for developing new products, processes and technologies that can create jobs, increase productivity, and boost economic growth. Research also contributes to improving the quality of life by providing new solutions to health, environmental and educational problems. In the area of capacity building, research enables students and scientists to develop new skills, knowledge, and expertise that can be used to solve various societal issues. Research is an essential vehicle for promoting human and economic development in any society. It contributes to the development and growth of science, technology and innovation, and provides valuable insights that can inform policy-making and decision-making.
