The Enugu Zonal Command of theĀ Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on November 2, 2023,Ā secured the convictionĀ and sentencingĀ of 22Ā (twenty-two)Ā internet fraudsters before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Awka,Ā Anambra State.
Ā They were convicted on separateĀ countĀ charges borderingĀ on impersonationĀ and obtaining by false pretences
TheĀ convicts are:Ā Ayodeji Jerome Olumeko, Chima Blessing Afam, Obalim Johndson, MichaelĀ Echezona Anyikaeme, Alior Chidera Emmanuel, Chidiebube Ukaigwe Emmanuel, DimĀ Samuel, Amobi Stanley Ajala, Irobi KingsleyĀ Chiedozie, Oranusi Sylvester Chigozie, AgboĀ Michael, Chibuisi Okpara.
Others are;Ā Casmir Ibebuogu, Nweze Chinamkpa, Precious Oluebube Chukwuka, NzubeĀ Michael, Chisom KingsleyĀ Mba, Chidera Hedrack Peter,Ā Chukwuka Emmanuel, ChineduĀ James Nworji, Chukwunansa Igweonu and Akpata Sunday Onose.
One of the chargesĀ againstĀ Ā Olumeko reads;
āthat you AYODEJI JEROME OLUMEKO sometime in June, 2023 in Ugwuaji, Enugu State, within theĀ jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, fraudulently impersonated one Scott Herman a foreignĀ National by means of your iphone 12 pro, through yourĀ gmail account with intent to gain advantage toĀ yourself a pretence which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary toĀ SectionĀ 22(3) (a) of the Cybercrimes ( Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act. 2015 and punishable under Section (22)(4) of the same Actā
AnotherĀ charge against Onose reads; āthat you AKPATA SUNDAY ONOSE sometime inĀ October, 2023 in Enugu, Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court, fraudulentlyĀ impersonated one Caire Gilliard a white lady on your Facebook account using your Infinix Phone withĀ intend to obtain money by false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to SectionĀ 22(2)Ā (b) and punishable under Section (22) (2) (iv) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act.2015.
They all pleaded guilty to all the charges when they were read to them.
Justice DimgbaĀ convicted andĀ sentenced seventeen ofĀ the defendantsĀ to two years imprisonment,Ā Ā with community serviceĀ each orĀ anĀ option ofĀ fine of N120, 000.00Ā ( One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira only) . Four of the defendants:Ā Ā Samuel, ChidiebubeĀ Ukaigwe Emmanuel, NwezeĀ and ChukwukaĀ Emmanuel were cautioned andĀ givenĀ communityĀ services.Ā OnlyĀ Okpara was cautioned and discharged.
All the convicts bagged their imprisonment when they were arrested by operatives of the EFCC for internet-related offences.Ā They were investigated, prosecuted and convicted.
