The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has commended the appointment of Hon. Kayode Oladele as the Acting Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the expiration of the tenure of Dr. Muheebah Dankaka.
In an official statement signed by HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, the civil society organisation described Hon. Oladele as a seasoned legal practitioner, human rights advocate, and former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes, whose track record reflects a commitment to integrity and public accountability.
“This appointment comes at a critical time for the Commission, following widespread dissatisfaction, internal protests, and public outcry over allegations of administrative failure, poor leadership, and disregard for the federal character principle under the previous leadership,” Suraju noted.
The anti-corruption group further urged Hon. Oladele to ensure that the Commission, under his stewardship, is guided by the principles of equity, transparency, and strict adherence to the Federal Character principle as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and other laws promoting civil and political rights of citizens.
HEDA stressed that the Federal Character Commission plays a vital role in strengthening national unity, promoting inclusiveness and cohesion, and ensuring fair representation in public appointments, private employments, and public service delivery at Federal, State and Local Government levels.
The organisation also called on the new Acting Chairman to prioritise staff welfare, uphold professional standards, and implement meaningful reforms to restore the credibility and effectiveness of the Commission. According to the group, the events of recent months underscore the urgent need for accountable leadership and renewed commitment to public service values.
“While we welcome this new phase at the FCC, HEDA will continue to monitor developments and engage stakeholders to ensure the Commission fulfils its constitutional mandate in the interest of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
HEDA acknowledges Hon. Oladele’s extensive background as a seasoned legal practitioner, human rights advocate, and a former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes. His longstanding record of integrity, fairness, and constitutional adherence makes him a fitting choice to steer the affairs of the FCC during this transitional period.
