Addressing journalists in Abuja, the group’s Chairman, Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, said it was unjust that the North Central remains the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice President since independence, despite its immense contributions to national development and unity.

The agitation for Nigeria’s highest office took a new turn on Saturday as the North-Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) boldly demanded that major opposition parties zone their 2027 presidential ticket to the North-Central region.

Prof. K’tso Nghargbu

, said it was unjust that the North Central remains the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice President since independence, despite its immense contributions to national development and unity.

He argued that the time had come for the region to rise beyond playing the role of “political escorts” and insist on full participation at the center of power.

“No amount of party chairmanship positions or other secondary roles will deter us from our demand for the presidency,” Nghargbu declared.

“We will no longer accompany other zones as escorts, backbenchers, spectators, or political underdogs to the glorious location called Nigeria.”

The group specifically appealed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and other opposition blocs, noting that as the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) already has President Bola Tinubu, who retains the constitutional right of first refusal for a second term.

With the Hausa/Fulani in all North Central states, the Yoruba in Kogi and Kwara, and the Igbo in Kogi and Benue, the zone reflects Nigeria’s diversity and inclusivity more than any other region.

“A leader from the North Central will have the experience and temperament to manage Nigeria’s diversity and promote national unity. Our zone embodies the inclusivity that Nigeria aspires to,” Nghargbu stressed.

According to the NCRM chairman, zoning the 2027 presidency to the North Central is not only a matter of fairness but also a test of Nigeria’s commitment to inclusivity and justice.

He urged opposition parties to demonstrate political foresight by recognizing the North Central’s sacrifices, warning that continued neglect would deepen feelings of marginalization.

“This demand is a call to action for all stakeholders. The North-Central has paid its dues. The time to lead Nigeria is now,” Nghargbu insisted.

Nghargbu maintained that the North-Central’s aspiration presents a unique opportunity for Northern leaders to demonstrate inclusivity within the region, while also fostering goodwill with Southern blocs ahead of 2027.

He concluded by emphasizing that the 2027 election could mark a turning point, not just for the North Central, but for Nigeria’s political balance and democratic consolidation.
